Grok API Pricing: Per-Model Cost Per Token

Grok's models are priced close together, so the real question is not which rate is lowest. It is which Grok does your job for the least actual spend.

ModelInputOutputBatch inBatch outCache read
Grok 4.20$1.25$2.50$1.00$2.00$0.20
Grok 4.20 Reasoning$1.25$2.50$1.00$2.00$0.20
Grok 4.3$1.25$2.50$1.00$2.00$0.20
Grok 4.5$2.00$6.00$1.60$4.80$0.30
Grok 4.6$2.00$6.00$1.60$4.80$0.50
Grok 4.7$2.00$6.00$1.60$4.80$0.50

All prices in USD per 1M tokens. Batch runs asynchronously at a reduced rate; cache read applies to reused input tokens. A dash means the provider does not publish that rate.

Grok’s per-token rates sit in a narrow range, from $1.25 to $2.00 per million input tokens. That makes model choice look like it barely matters. It matters, just not in the way the list suggests.

The headline rate is not the rate you pay

Batch requests bill 20% cheaper, and cached input (tokens you resend, like a fixed system prompt) bills at a quarter of standard. The headline rate is where an estimate starts, not where the bill lands.

Grok 4.7 input: one headline rate, three real rates ($/1M tokens)

Close on the price list, far apart on the bill

We ran three Grok models on the same job and measured what each run actually cost. Bubble size is the per-token price, so Grok 4.6 and 4.7 are the same size. Yet 4.7 sits far to the right, because it spends more tokens to answer and costs about five times what 4.3 did for the same work. The per-token price never shows you that. The cost of a real run does.

Quality vs cost per run (extraction task). Bubble size = price per token.

The cheapest Grok keeps up

We scored those same runs against a correct answer. The first job was an everyday one, pulling action items out of a meeting note; the second had a single right answer, working out ship dates under a set of rules. On the everyday job the three models landed within five points of each other. On the harder one they all tied at 100. Grok 4.3, the cheapest in the lineup, cleared the bar both times, so paying up for a pricier Grok bought no more quality here.

Quality on two tasks: the cheapest Grok keeps up

Insight: Grok 4.3 is the cheapest model and the cheapest to run, and it matched the top score on both tasks. The more expensive Grok models did not do any better here. The only way to know which Grok is right for your own task is to run it.

The best model today is not the best model forever

xAI updates these models constantly, so the model that clears your bar today can slip below it next week while a rival climbs past it. Measuring once picks the right model now. Measuring on a schedule keeps quality high and cost down with no quiet regressions or cost creep.

Bake in great AI model hygiene

Choosing the right AI model is easy and objectively measured when you follow these steps:

  1. Define measurable quality bars for your tasks
  2. Pick the cheapest model that passes reliably
  3. Measure the whole pipeline, including RAG stores, so you’re always optimizing the right thing
  4. Monitor on a schedule so regressions and drift are fixed proactively

On Pro, your agent can run this check for you over MCP.

Agent

> run_evaluation models: grok-4.3, grok-4.7 task: extraction bar: 90
polling ... running ... done
grok-4.7: quality 100 cost $0.003194/run
grok-4.3: quality 100 cost $0.000598/run
grok-4.3 clears the bar at the same quality for 81% less. recommend switching.

What you get on Pro

  • Score any Grok model on your own task
  • Cost, quality, and latency side by side

The table lists the Grok models we support for evaluation, not xAI's full catalogue. Rates come from our live registry and are updated frequently. The scored runs are real: three models, two tasks, 2026-10-21. Your own task will score differently, against your prompts and data.
